Ratings for Sci-Fi Friday Night Block (9.23.05)

The 2-part mid-season finale of Stargate Atlantis tied the show's lowest ratings ever on Friday, September 23. "Aurora" and "The Lost Boys" averaged a 1.7 household rating from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern / Pacific.

This is a drop of only one-tenth of a point from SG-1's 2-hour performance in the same time slot the previous week, and two-tenths of a point from the last Atlantis episode on September 9. It also ties the show's lowest rating in its 14-month history, set by Season One's "Home" last September.

The show faced stiff competition from new episodes on the big broadcast networks, as did SG-1's summer finale. Threshold, Ghost Whisperer, and WWE were among the competition.

Battlestar Galactica built on its lead-in at 10 p.m., with the mid-season finale "Pegasus" earning a 2.0 rating. This is an improvement of one-tenth of a point from the previous week.

Outside of the primetime block, Firefly scored a healthy 1.3 rating in the 7 p.m. slot with the SCI FI premiere of "Ariel." This is up one-tenth of a point from the 1.2 rating earned by the previous week's episode, "Out of Gas."

With the season's first half wrapped up, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis are both averaging a 2.0 rating for the season-to-date (both rounded up from an identical 1.96). SG-1's highest rating so far this season was for "Avalon" parts one and two (2.1), its low the finale "Prototype" and "The Fourth Horseman, Part 1" (1.8).

Atlantis topped the charts this summer with "The Siege, Part 3" and "Instinct" (2.2).

Battlestar Galactica has averaged a 2.1 rating to date for its second season. The premiere, "Scattered," set the season's high mark (2.6), with "Resistance" and "Flight of the Phoenix" tying with the low (1.9).

Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Battlestar Galactica will return to SCI FI in January with the second half of their current seasons. Catch reruns of your favorites this fall every Friday night.

It all comes down to cost, the shows have doing about the same for their life, this means a lack of fresh viewers, this is not a bad thing because it shows a good following, but does have an impact on the profit margin, if the show becomes too expensive to continue, it could mean the show gets cancelled. Both SG-1 and BSG are syndicated and pull in other revenue.

What sucks is that UPN moved WWE Smackdown to Friday nights. While it's not as highly rated as it once was, it still will force the core audience, 18-34 year olds, to choose. It looks like some are choosing Smackdown.
