What really put Strahd into the danger zone for my group was his spellcasting ability, specifically fireball.

Lol, yeah, I did, and it was pure wonderful. They still beat him, but only because of the sun relic. The adventure has multiple methods to one up the vampire built into it, which is kinda cool, you can play this scenario a whole bunch of times and it would end differently. Like majorly different.
