D&D 5E Ravenloft in 5e: What would you like to see?

I've always liked Ravenloft as a setting, but I felt D&D's high-fantasy detracted from the horror elements of what should be a grim and gritty setting. This may sound weird, but I'd much rather play Ravenloft using a completely different set of rules. Vampire: Dark Ages springs to mind.
Funny, but when we played V:TDA, it felt worse than a D&D game. Maybe it was group dynamics, but the PCs tromped around killing everything and looting worse than any D&D group (let alone RL) group because every one of them was OP. Without the masquerade, vampire breaks down into worst examples of munchkins I've seen.

YMMV and all that.

Old Skool

I'd prefer Ravenloft in its original mysterious incarnation. I like the idea of the mists rising anytime and anywhere to pull people into a world populated by people who have no clue about the true nature of their world.

I also think it should go back to being its own separate demiplane. It feels misplaced in Shadowfell.

It really depends on the needs of the group. For an adventure or one-shot, the modular Mists work better. For a campaign, the living world works better. A product that accommodates both to some extent would be nice.

I really liked the lore and writing in the licensed 3e Ravenloft products. The normal world with horrors lurking just beneath the surface appeals to me. I prefer local, native heroes to outsiders. People whose goal isn't just to escape, but to try and make the world a better place.
