I highly reccomend Feat of Goblyns if you can get your hands on it. I believe it's a 4-7th level module. My players had a blast with it. It's deadly but lots of fun. I believe the module set in Lamordia was of low-level, I think it's called Adam's Wrath, but I'm not posative. Anyhoo, enjoy!

My mistake, it was Night of the Walking Dead that was the 1st level adventure, Adam's wrath is for 5th level characters.

Check out Ravenloft: Fraternity of Shadows: Home of Ravenloft on the Net, and post this question on their forums.

There are some intro threads stickied at the top of the general forum. Note that the site is also a veritable treasure trove of netbooks, gm resource, adventures, reviews and information on RL in general. Also check out their FAQ and the Mistipedia.

Another great site for netbooks is www.kargatane.com. (The authors of this site, became the 3E RL writers...)

The 2E Domains of Dread is the resource to go for if you play 2E, though the Black Box is of course mandatory. Domains of Dread first introduced native characters, special Ravenloft classes and races rules. It is a bit pricey these days though.

If you're on a budget I'd recommend getting cheap Ravenloft lots from ebay, and/or relying on netbooks articles or free adventures from the sites above. And check out the marketplace thread on the FoS General forum for great advice on where and how to get stuff cheap.

Night of the Walking Dead is available as a free download here: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/files/notwd.pdf It is a classic introductory RL adventure set in the domain Souragne, a fantasy pastiche of Lousiana. The FoS have made a 3E netbook for this domain available in their downloads section. This domain was only scarcely described in the canon material, so basing your campaign in a domain like this will help you keep your budget low, but you'll also have to improvise and rely on netbooks and articles.

Another great resource for cheap and great 2E adventures written or adaptable for RL is Dungeon Magazine. The FoS has a list of all Ravenloft Dungeon adventures, but there are many more which are easily adaptable to RL. Check out this Dungeon index or this one

Thanks so much Thanael!

We were, admittedly, suffering from a deficit of sorts on exactly where to begin or what to do afterwards (we don't even have the black box yet though, so we aren't close to starting). All of these different resources and this advice should really help us kick-start our playing with the minimum amount of a 'break in' period.

thanks again!

Also, none of us has played 2e before. we've read the books, but i'm a little worried that Ravenloft might be too much of a 'pro' campaign, where it's hard for beginning players to grasp it, let alone survive it. I know you've all adressed this situation in one form or another (again, thanks), but, directly, do you think we can manage Ravenloft from the get-go?

I say give it a go. Ravenloft is great in that the setting practically calls for PCs to go ahead carefully and be a bit scared about the monsters. And if a PC dies you just roll a new one. That's an (A)D&D tradition! :-)

Have you already created your characters? If yes what are they? If no what are your ideas character concepst so far? Do you plan to play natives or outlanders?

And seriously check out the FoS site. There's lots of free material there that you (or your DM) can start reading on...

Well, this is embarrassing....

We're actually going to play Planescape. We originally chose 2nd Edition AD&D because we wanted to play Planescape (Although our only other choice would have been 1st Edition AD&D). After we bought our books, the price of planescape shot up to around 60 dollars. Now, though, it's lowered, so we'll be playing that.

However, seeing as Ravenloft is a fairly planar setting, I think it would make perfect sense for our characters to wander into the fog somewhere on the lower planes and appear in Ravenloft, so we'll still take all of your advice to heart.

Thanks again, and sorry, haha.

No problem. For Planescape check out planewalker.com. Did you consider playing 3E with the SRD and the planewalker PS3E conversion ? You'd still need to get the adventures, supplements from 2E though.
