Ray attacks, do they effect both the beast and someone upon it's back??

During a session last night our group came across this situation. Basically my character 7th Ranger 8th Shadowdancer shadow jumped onto the back of a huge blue dragon, upon the turn of our wizard in the next round he cast polar ray at the dragon which I was upon the back of. The DM then said that it would effect me and the dragon as I was riding it I became part of it (as in phasers in star trek where 2 people fight they both get vapourized if struck by the phaser) Well the group argued about this for a few mins and the DM backed down saying it effected only the dragon as that is what the person aimed for and hit easily and the spell description says dealing damage to the target not riders aswell.
Any input would be great, thanks in advance.

The ray would not hit the rider, unless the DM ruled that you were not riding the dragon just grappling with it. If you were effectively grappling with it, there would be a percentage chance that you were the target.
