Re-building a character to fit the campaign

MithrasRahl

First Post
So I made a Ranger/Fighter for this campaign, but was informed in the first session that my character had the "Thief" background story; it was interesting, but my character build hardly fit what I would want to do. The DM is allowing me to re-make my character, so I'm coming here for suggestions.

The scenario is a world of floating islands, and we've just been made "ministers" of a big city. By minister I mean we have a lot of power, but we are below the Lord Mayor. There will be fights aplenty, both in city and out, and my minister role is that of the Executioner; mainly, I run the prisons, the spy ring, and I'm the only one with a licence to kill (though, clearly, I wont be the only one)

I'm thinking some type of rogue combo, I'll need the skills, but I'll also need combat ability, since our party consists or a sorc, artificer and a swashbuckler/rogue.

We start at lvl 5, any suggestions?

Why?

Why is your DM forcing you into a shoehorn backstory mold? Also, your party already has a rogue, which is pretty much the third edition version of the thief. If you really want to rework your char to have a thiefish background, perhaps a bard (I shudder as I type). At least you have healing

I know, I know, I guess I don't *have* to follow it, but there is enough interesting stuff that I would like to, I just wish I had known before making my character.

...and bard? really?

It's not so much that it couldn't, in theory, fit a thief background. It's that in this particular setting I A) had already built my character to be a dmg dealing archer before finding out about the thief background, and B) am really liking this spymaster stuff, just don't have the skills/skill points to do much at the moment

Some options:

-Replace some/all of your Ranger levels with Scout or Fighter levels with Swashbuckler, Swordsage, or Warblade.
-Crack open Unearthed Arcana and consider the Thug or martial Rogue instead of Fighter or the Urban Ranger instead of the normal Ranger.

-Stuart

So there is already a Swashbuckler/rogue? Go bountyhunter type with Scout/Ranger and the Swift Hunter feat. Check out the climb speed variant in PHB2, you'll love it as a thief.

You'll be good at fighting, able to dish out good damage with Imp Skirmish while staying far away from full attack actions, and undead are not a problem if you take them as favored enemy.

Try barbarian/fighter instead.

The barbarian could fit a street urchin history.

The party already has too many roguish characters so another rogue will give far to few meatshield types (as in none).

Well there is the fact that a bard can heal, which your group is lacking (unless artificer is going to be able to bootleg cure wands). You can also use cure wands you find without UMD checks. Also, there's a little spell called Glibness =P
