Hello All,
Just wondering how mant DM's out there allow players to re-roll 1's during character creation. Also do you allow re-rolls for 1's on anything eles (Hit Points, etc.). I play in two different game and one DM allows re-rolls and the other does not.

I allow re-rolling 1s during character creation. I like PCs to have higher stats. They are supposed to be superior in ability to the average townfolk schlub.

My current DM allows re-rolling of hit points. The rule is that you can request a re-roll no matter what the number comes up, but you have to accept whatever the re-roll is. It reduces the chance of a 1, but it's still possible. I usually re-roll if I get anything less than half.

For whatever reason, we tend to mostly use stat generation schemes that aren't dice generated. The Age of Worms I'm playing in, for instance, gave us 80 points to distribute straight (not point buy! Good heavens!), when I last ran I used standard array plus three ability increases, etc.

We do reroll 1s on hit point rolls, but we also tend to be able to roll at least twice on hit points anyway. Our current game is you roll, if you roll badly, you can take the GM's roll instead. I suspect that he rerolls really bad rolls like 1s, though. When I ran, I just flat out said roll hit dice twice and take your pick of the two rolls.

Well, at first level everyone gets max hit points, but at 2nd I allow that if you roll a 1 or 2, you can re-roll, but if you roll a "2" again, you gotta keep it. If you roll a "1" again you can re-roll once again - but if it is a "1", you gotta keep it.

At 3rd level, if you roll a "1" you may re-roll, but if you roll a "1" again, you gotta keep it.

After that, however the dice fall, they fall. However, I do give people the option of not rolling at all and taking the average - but his choice has to be made before any dice are rolled.

Basically, I don't believe in tempting the dice gods beyond a certain point, and if they have decreed that someone should roll a "1" for hit points and tweaked the universe of probability in that moment to reinforce that point, who am I to argue? ;)

Yes. But since most DMs re-roll 1's, I now have players re-roll 1's and 2's to make sure my PCs have higher stats than average. If this becomes standard, I'll plan to have them re-roll 1's, 2's, and 3's, and so forth.

Kidding. :)

Yes, we usually allow the rerolling of 1's in character creation (unless we are playing something that might have a horrific or grim tone, which isnt often). Never thought about it with HP. Normally we allow you to roll hp or take the average based on your HD, since thats pretty much the way the monsters in the MM are done. As a player I always take the average.

I require my players to use Point Buy, so it doesn't come up. And, my method for rolling hit points has built-in minimums, so, no problems there either.
