re-rolling 1's

In PBPs I run, it's point buy and fixed hit points; at the tabletop, the guys who DM let us roll 3 sets of stats on 4d6 drop lowest, so if a 1 is a keeper, it's probably in a set of 6, 6, 1, 1 or something like that.

I let my players re-roll 1's for HP, and fighter-types 1 and 2's until they do not roll those numbers.

For stats i allow 4d6 drop lowest, arrange as desired AND you can do that 3 times, choosing the best column of stats, no swapping between the 3 columns of stats.

I buff the BBEG too...

Hello All,
Just wondering how mant DM's out there allow players to re-roll 1's during character creation. Also do you allow re-rolls for 1's on anything eles (Hit Points, etc.). I play in two different game and one DM allows re-rolls and the other does not.

I've played with several DMs who allow the rerolling of ones and twos. In most of my campaigns of late, I've been having the players simply roll 4d4, drop the lowest, and add 6. This eliminates the extra die rolls with essentially the same result. Another option is to just give everyone, say, a 16 and a 17, then have them roll the rest normally and make them keep the results. This method still allows for low rolls while giving players a reasonable chance to go with their guts on builds and still be effective.

Since point buy (even in 2e), I've generally liked 75% max hit points + Con, recalc each level. Thus, a 3rd level rogue has 3*6*.75 hp (rounded off) + 3*Con. Makes no sense to have just one key characteristic randomized. Especially since I've done 50% hp for standard monsters and 75% hp for elite encounters even back to 1e.

I never saw much point in rerolling.

The edition of classic D&D I'm currently running has an option for rerolling hp on a 1 or 2. Instead, I have the players roll (n-2)d+2. e.g. If the class uses d6 for hp, I have them roll d4+2 instead.

I'm thinking of going with 2d6+6 for ability scores at some point.
