Rerolls for our group are for hp.

Max hp at 1st, greater than half the die at 2nd and 3rd, with one reroll of hp between lvls 1-10 and one between 11-20. Player must take the 2nd roll.

Its not much - just a little to make up for the occasional '1'.

I don't roll my ability scores, I decide my ability scores.

That way, it's extremely difficult for me to ever be dissatisfied with my stats. Afterall, I chose them, so I should be happy with them......no?

What is an overpowered character, Alex.*

Seriously, if you give yourself all 18s, where's the fun? To me the fun is having both high and low stats so there's always new challenges for my PC.

Me personally, I don't allow rerolls of anything. I *have* arranged my house rules so that they're not 'necessary', mind you. So, in a way, I can see why quite a few people do use them.
Exactly.

As a DM I let my players choose from 2 dice rolling conventions: roll 3d6 reroll 1's, or roll 4d6 discard the lowest; both are arrange to suit. Hit points are always max at first and second levels then rolled for normally.

Interesting thought that limits your attribute range from 6 to 18. I am not sure what does to the Bell Curve, though.
Moving from 4d6 drop lowest to 4d6 reroll 1s drop lowest moves the average roll from 12.23 to 13.43. The most common roll will be a 14 (16 percent of the time). The chance of a 6 is 0.16%, the chance of an 18 is 2.7%. About seven in nine rolls will be 12 (+1 bonus) or better, about one roll in 17 will be nine (-1 penalty) or worse.

Hello All,
Just wondering how mant DM's out there allow players to re-roll 1's during character creation. Also do you allow re-rolls for 1's on anything eles (Hit Points, etc.). I play in two different game and one DM allows re-rolls and the other does not.

Beldar

For character creation. I use the 4d6 (drop lowest die), roll 7 times (drop the lowest roll.)

For hit points I use .5 over average:

d4 = 3 min
d6 = 4 min
d8 = 5 min
d10 = 6 min

If you roll lower than the min, you take the min.

I had one player who decided that I should allow him to re-roll 1s during character creation. So he did it anyway. I think he finally understood after his new pc died 4 weeks in a row.

Thanks,
Rich

Thank you Sir. My brain was hurting and I was thinking, "This is simple math what's wrong with me?!"

Interesting choice. Your chances of getting an average result are much higher in 3d6 reroll than they are in 4d6 drop. But 4d6 results in higher rolls on average.

In both situations, you have the same chance of rolling a 6 as you do an 18, but that chance is more than doubled in the 4d6 roll.

So is it worth doubling your chances of getting an 18 if it doubles your chances of getting a 6?

Here are the numbers:

Code:
3d6, reroll ones:

06     .8%
07    2.4%
08    4.8%
09    8%
10   12%
11   14.4%
12   15.2%
13   14.4%
14   12%
15    8%
16    4.8%
17    2.4%
18     .8%

4d6, drop lowest:

03    .08%
04    .38%
05    .77%
06   1.62%
07   2.93%
08   4.78%
09   7.02%
10   9.41%
11  11.45%
12  12.89%
13  13.24%
14  12.35%
15  10.11%
16   7.25%
17   4.17%
18   1.62%
