[real life] Cash versus convenience... help!

If it were two hours commute total a day I'd say go for it--a nice excuse to read and get your work done so your time at home is free. But four hours? No way. I've found again and again in life, young one, that it is better spend a bit extra for more comfort and convenience. Not to mention that time is more valuable than money.

If your friend suggested that you try not living with him, are you sure he really wants you to stay with him, and that he is not just kind?

If there's any way you can afford it, pick the option without that commute. That thing will eat away at your life in ways you might not be able to imagine. It will probably utterly exhaust you.

Agreed. Believe me, I have been where you are looking at being--without a car, way the hell away from where you need to be in order to do the stuff you gotta do. It's a horrible place to be. It will crush your soul. Don't go there if you have any other option.

I'd much rather live on ramen for a couple months.

I lived with a 2 hour each way commute before. It was great for reading notes/books and even catching up on some sleep. As a student I survived on powernaps, especially when every second night you were going out with friends.

The suggestions of biking are good, and you could possibly pick up an old generator style motor for the bicycle cheap (I'm in Australia so do not know the costings). The problem here is your knapsack load (lots of books/pads/pencils/etc or laptop).

The 10 minute walk sounds like the best option but if you cannot afford it then you cannot afford it. Have you checked if there are school dorms available? Or are they too expensive?

And how hard would it be for you to get a small loan from family/friends/school to cover you for a while? Or does that affect the unemployment benefit?

I used to have a 1-2 hour communte each way (given local traffic). I could "handle it" most of the time and really didn't "know any better" But then for a little while I have a 10 minute commute each way. I can't begin to explain the difference it made in my time and energy level.

So *if it were me* (since both scenarios involve living with nonfamily members/non significant others) I would opt for the shorter commute if i could find a way to make it work.

The public shuttle bus goes from Williamswood, N.S. to Spryfield N.S in about 40 minutes, then I have two transfers to get to the school in Dartmouth N.S.

If the long commute was a single bus or train, I'd say take the commute. But if it's three transfers, forget it. You'll never be able to get good studying or relaxation time in when your dealing with transfers and connections on top of the public transportation hassle.

A four hour commute per day is crazy.

Go find a minimum wage job at university, work 10 hours a week and you'll have your food money.
