These are some great sites. Thanks to everyone who contributed. They inspire some great game ideas...

The cenots of Mexico just beg for some H.P. Lovecrafts fishmen or Shaugin treatment. The Aztecs threw bodies into the watery holes who's to say that they weren't placating something dark and evil lurking down in those interconnected rivers.

The cave in Oman is perfect for a human city sheltered in a natural cave.

I am not even through all of these links yet.....

It has all the fantastic elements you could want (as long as you can look past the tour buses filled with American and German tourists):

A storybook castle and abbey built high upon a mount, encrusted by a tiny town around its flanks, and isolated by killer tides. Centuries of history.

According to legend, the original abbey was surrounded by premedieval forest until a massive storm blew the plain clean and left the sea in its wake.

It has layers upon layers of architecture. Extremely detailed maps are available in the tourist books.
