Real-time situations

Heya,

Tonight's session saw three PC party members infected by Kyuss worms that had just reached the brain as the battle ended. After explaining what I was going to do to the players, I started my stopwatch and began assessing Intelligence damage every six seconds while the players shouted out their actions - it was great. It certainly conveyed the intensity of the situation.

In retrospect, I think I would have averaged the 1d2 Int damage to 3 damage every 2 rounds rather than continuously rolling dice. I also think the next cleric in the party will stock remove disease scrolls or potions. ;)

What? Sons of Kyuss are ancient monsters of yesteryear, presented in the very first Fiend Folio, IRC.

Yep, 1st Edition horrors that were updated in the Monster Manual II in 2002/2003. They have since appeared in ... some adventures.

I don't really have a problem with that kind of thing. One of my friends is fond of doing something like that in just about every campaign he runs.

But I almost never do it myself. Probably because my mental gears just turn slower than just about everyone I know. I might get the best grade on a test in the class, but make it timed, & I'll be the only one who doesn't finish. So, I tend to not enjoy putting time pressures on others.
