Reasons for Fluff etc. (Perkins' blog)

At this point in my DMing career, I have no interest in worldbuilding, nor do I feel like investing in a detailed, established game world.

I would love a 'core setting' which is vague enough for me to add my own elements (if I wished) but with enough detail for me to use it right off the shelf.

Fluff need not be campaign world material. I had no problem with the Fluff in 3.0/ 3.5. We just took what we wanted the left the rest.

And yes inspiration is the key. I dare you to try the new Pathfinder book "burnt offerings" from Paizo. This is the kind of product I like to spend my money on!

Jerry Bruckheimer would like to have a word with you. So would the the International Association of Ice Cream Manufacturers. They seem to think making a product that has a flavor that runs contrary to the tastes of the market is not the way to sell a product. They recommend vanilla rather than trying to force on the market something that they don't really want to buy.
You can't change the flavor of the ice cream you've bought, or the movie you're watching.

You can, and most likely do, change the flavor of the game you're running/playing.

You can't however only buy the pages of the book which contain the flavor that you want.
And while you can create a house rule document which recreates the rules without the unwanted flavor, the undertaking involves a bit of work both in the creation of the document and its distribution to insure that your players understand what game you are playing.

However, all that aside, the fact that the rules or flavor can be changed does not in itself justify the rules or the flavor.

I don't think a single one of us who post here will have an ounce of trouble making use of the fluff material in the core rulebooks, whether utilizing or "working around" it.
