Recharging Magic Items

This question has probably been brought up before, so sorry in advance for being a numpty and not spotting it in the forum, (is there a search facility btw?).

BUT

How do you recharge magic items in 3.5e ?

I know there used to be a specific spell for it at one time when all the munchkin books were out, before 3e but I can't find any reference to recharging in the new rules.

I am happy to make up some rules too, but would be nice to see any other "house" rules out there. My initial rule would to be to classify items as one use or rechargable. Items that can be recharged are done so but casting the same spells "into" the item, a bit like a ring of spell storing.

As far as the RAW are concerned, there is no way to recharge items.

(There is a Search function, but you have to be a Community Supporter to use it)

Items that can be recharged simply by casting spells into them need to be massively expensive to be balanced (See 'Ring of Spell Storing')

Many people believe it's balanced to allow casters with the appropriate feats to recharge items by expending gold and XP similar to the items original per-charge creation cost.

Example:
A common rule is to allow recharging a Wand in 10 charge increments. Adding 10 charges to a partially expended Wand would thus cost SLxCLx150gp and SLxCLx6xp (i.e., 1/5th the cost of a new wand).
 




I always ruled along the lines of Pyrex when one of my PCs would try to recharge a staff or wand... at least if it was a staff/wand that they'd bought/found.

If it was one they'd created themselves though, I ruled they were so intimately familiar with the construction and properties of the staff that they were able to recharge it at a reduced price. I cut 30% off the gp and xp costs. It made the items take on more significance to the wizard in my party, and generally led to the characters making more of an effort to personalize their staffs and to treat them as the powerful tools they were, along with thinking long term when they created magical items.

But yeah, that's totally a house rule.
