Recommend me some older RPGs

Divine Divinity 1/2 were pretty good RPGs... Really, really long. But they were fun.

Those are Diablo-style games, right? I'm not a huge fan of that type of gameplay - but I'll look into them. Thanks.

Great scott, you loved FFT and Vagrant Story and never played Xenogears!? You should rectify this at the first opportunity.

I've heard terrible, terrible things about Xenogears from multiple sources. I heard it was great for the first disc, but fell apart spectacularly on the second disc. Have I been misinformed?

And how about the Xenosaga games for the PS2?

I note you haven't listed Final Fantasy 12;

I actually have this game, but have not, as yet, been able to get into it. I keep meaning to give it another try - maybe I'll do that this weekend.

As for some of the other games you listed, I tried Tactics Ogre and found it to be too much, so I ended up selling it. I liked the first Vandal Hearts, but hated the combat system in the second one (simultaneous turns? WTF?). FF6 I've also played - I liked that one well enough.

I remember being sort of interested in Valkyrie Profile, but something about it put me off. Can't remember what, though. I'll look into it again. Thanks for all the recommendations.

Temple of Elemental Evil is also noteworthy, of course. It's a solid game (don't forget to patch).

Oh, I played that one too and forgot to list it. Pretty solid, I thought, though obviously rushed to market.

Yeah, do that.

I note you haven't listed Final Fantasy 12; I'm not fond of its gameplay 'innovations,' but they mostly make it more like Baldur's Gate or KotOR, so it might suit you better; much of the Vagrant Story and FFT team worked on it, which is a major plus.

I rather liked the gameplay (having just finished the game this week), and if it's possible to make a prettier PS2 RPG, I'd be surprised. But it's the first FF in forever that really needed more cutscenes of characters talking to each other, giving backstory, and developing relationships. Also the first one in forever that requires a non-trivial amount of level-up work -- unless you know the ins and outs of the game really well, there are points where you will die if underleveled (me, I got too paranoid near the end and spent a lot of time mark-hunting, to the point where it wasn't all that challenging in the end of the main game sequence -- even if the three or four marks I had left might have been a problem).

Not really (though it's overstating things somewhat), but the second disk is so much shorter that it's kind of irrelevant; the first disk is at least 80% of the game, if not 90%.

I missed that when it came out, but it might be worth looking into. Didn't it use 3rd edition rules? If so, how was the implementation?
Not bad. There's no AoO, but since it uses the same graphics as BG2, they're far superior (and don't look nearly as outdated) as some other games that came out around the same time.

Vampire 2: Bloodlines, Fable, Jade Empire, The Fall (if it is available in english already, that is).

Can't really recommend any of those, though, since I didn't like Oblivion and havn't played the others myself. ;)

I did play Jade Empire and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone here. Shorter than Bioware's other games, but the character interactions right there with the rest of them.

I'll suggest Ultimas 6, 7, 7 pt 2, and both Underworld games. They're all from the early nineties, so getting copies could be problematical and getting them to run even more so. They are however my favorite crpg's ever.
