For sort of surreal high-weirdness stuff, I've used Medeski Martin and Wood.

Remember Enigma? "Silence, Part 1" with the Gregorian chant set to an electronic beat with a little shakuhachi on the top? I've always thought that has the makings of an RPG soundtrack...Vatican monster hunters or something like that, maybe...

Vangelis would seem too Blade Runner to me.

I'll throw in Julee Cruise if you want to throw in some eerie Twin Peaks feel, if appropriate to what you are running.

If you're interested in a more classical vibe, check out Kronos Quartet- a chamber quartet with a decidedly avant garde edge.

My Gladiator soundtrack doesn't have any pop song.

I like to think that a score is a specific type of soundtrack.
I was talking specifically about the X-Files (the Cure, Foo Fighters, etc).....but yeah.

Lisa Gerrard (formerly of Dead Can Dance) did the Gladiator soundtrack, and no....she's too cool to do a pop song. ;) (As an aside, Dead Can Dance is usually more appropriate for D&D, but certainly would be fine for any other type of game.)

Moxy Fruvus' Green Eggs and Ham--? LOL

Digging through my winamp list for more game stuff...

The Halflife 1 & 2 (and subsequent expansions) OSTs (if you can find them), the original Quake OST (The one done by Reznor), The Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (gamecube game). The Painkiller OST (included with the game), Both Parasite Eve OSTs, All of the Resident Evil OSTs (if you want more horrorific).

Some of the soundtracks listed are a bit all over the map, but all of them have a few tracks that work well. The one I use stuff from almost constantly is the quake soundtrack...its just so good for building that mysterious suspenseful mood.

Although, YMMV.
