Here's some notes that I was toying with for Defilers and Preservers.
Orbs, Staffs, Wands, Rods still exist, but are very rare (Paragon level, when they can choose the Second Implement feat?). So warlocks and wizards (all arcane characters?) can choose Defiling or Preserving for their implement.
Implement
All arcane classes can choose to defile or preserve as their implement. If an arcane character channels his powers in this way, he gets a +1 to hit at 6th level, +2 at 11th level, +3 at 16th level, +4 at 21st level, +5 at 26th level. If he defiles, he gains an additional +1 to hit.
A character that defiles for an At-Will spell affects a single square within a close burst 1. When defiling for an Encounter spell, all squares in a close burst 1 are affected. And when defiling for a Daily spell, all squares in a close burst 2 are affected.
A character can only choose to defile if at least half the affected squares contain living terrain (grasses, trees, etc.). Terrain that is difficult terrain or concealing terrain due to living vegetation becomes normal terrain. A defiled square becomes lifeless and barren and can no longer be used to defile.
Wizard's Arcane Implement Mastery
A wizard must choose either Defiler's Scourge or Preserver's Veil. This choice is in place of Orb of Imposition, Staff of Defense, or Wand of Accuracy.
Defiler's Scourge
Encounter * Arcane, Implement
Free Action
Effect: Your next spell's defilement radius increases by 1 square. One creature targeted by this spell takes an additional 1d6 damage.
Preserver's Veil
You gain a +2 bonus to Bluff checks to conceal that you are casting a spell.
Encounter * Arcane, Implement
Free Action
Effect: You can choose any square within 5 to be the origin square or the square from which line of effect is calculated for your next spell.
