Regeneration Ability and Spell not useful

I have been going through all the damage effects you can cause in the rule books and have not found one that causes you to loose a finger/arm/leg/toe/other body part. The only thing that does remove limb is a vorpal weapon. So besides regaining HP how is this ability useful within the current system?

Seems to be a hold over from previous editions. Also, a nice variant for those that play the game to the extent an arm becomes unusable or gets cut off.

In the heat of combat, regeneration is not a great ability. Only a handful of HP a round when any individual party member could do multiple times that....

I think the biggest plus of this ability is:

Damage dealt to the creature is treated as subdual damage, and the creature automatically cures itself of subdual damage at a
fixed rate.

That... and I've seen newbies, meeting a troll for the first time... bring it down with weapons, and watch in horror as it gets back up. They then proseed to hack it to bits... and much to their even greater horror, it reforms and gets back up!!!

How so? It's not like any previous edition had a combat system where you had a significant chance of losing limbs, either.

Alot of 1st edition groups used the Critical Hits and Fumbles charts from an early dragon. In it, you could (rarely) have a limb hacked off.

However, the biggest benefit of regeneration is you go into each new challenge with full hit points. You are never wittled down and succumb to multiple challenges (if you are careful).

We had a character in my sunday game get killed and drug off by a wyvern with orc rider. The orc chopped off the dead mans leg and feed it to the wyvern. If we had used raise dead on the body he would be short one leg. Until, regeneration occured.


By the normal hp system you cannot loss a limb but there are ways for it to happen.


Flesh to stone. Then shape stone or a hammer.

Severing a dead persons limb.


ect.


The spell is still nessessary if you don't get lucky enough to recover the whole corpse.
