Related to the sunder thread: Destrachan's and Rust Monsters - too easy?

I remember randomly rolling on an underdark encounter table and got 3 destrachans. 3 times an attack was made by the Destrachans with "metal" as what the sound wave would destroy. The party's saves were good enough that no one would fail escept on a natural one... but with a sword, shield, helmet and armour, three PC's wearing the stuff, and three attacks... that is 36 rolls. 1s happen. One player lost both his shield and his weapon.

The problem here is that if the party would have been wielding the Sword of Kas and the Sword of Heironeous himself, the Destrachans woud have detroyed them just as easily. Rust Monsters: same thing, except you do have the Everbright enhancement in Magic of Faerun and the Arms and Equipment guide to alleviate that somewhat.

Is there any chance that I did something wrong? Or are 20 destrachans the evil wizards' (who is defending his tower from the paladin) best friends?

A bit of a straw man arguement, as most artifacts have only one or two specific methods of destruction, in general...

Several designers have mentioned that a good adventure has a few places to loose magic items, [iirc some of the old Gygax stuff had possibilities where you trip and your sword / shiled falls down a fissure or crack in the ice and is lost] as well as ways to gain them. Which works for me, at least.

More than 30 hp? As you said, only the great club will hold. +9 swords still break like twigs. Way too easy still.

I am not interested in keeping in tact all weapons... but the way it is now is that it must be an artifact if it must be indestructible. What about swords of legend? Family heirloom's? I am thinking swords like Sturm's sword in the Dragonlance trilogy.

They are unavailable if you want to use nothing but core rules right? Actaully, still unavailble with everything WotC has printed so far.
