Religion and politics...OR.. Politics and religion?

In my world politics and religion are seen as equally clueless to the realities of any given situation. They are each steeped in their own delusions, making it difficult for players to get a feel for what the heck really is going on. In some ways this is bad, and I'm working on reducing their disorientation. But I'm hoping that as they, alone, come to learn the real situation that they assume the role of Heroes. If you suddenly knew you understood events leading to the end of civilization -- and no one else did -- wouldn't you do something if you could?

But until that clarity has been achieved in their minds they're kind of low-level (5th) PC's doing stuff that seems right to do now, but unsure of how important it really is.

In most worlds I've done, religion hasn't had a large influence on politics and visa versa. The various faiths tend to cancel each other out, so they rarely have enough time left over for hard-core political maneuvering in things that do not directly concern them. Usually they have their own courts and certain matters of law are considered the proper purview of the churches: demon-worship, for one.

IMC One major nation is a monotheistic militant theocracy, other nations are ruled by kings. Within the former religion rules big time, within the others politics rule but religion is getting a foothold (damn proselytes!)

Cheers
