Removing negative levels?

Energy Drained: The character gains one or more negative levels, which might permanently drain the character’s levels. If the subject has at least as many negative levels as Hit Dice, he dies. Each negative level gives a creature the following penalties: -1 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, ability checks; loss of 5 hit points; and -1 to effective level (for determining the power, duration, DC, and other details of spells or special abilities). In addition, a spellcaster loses one spell or spell slot from the highest spell level castable.
Say a character gets a negative level. Then the character gets a restoration. The -1 penalty on attacks, saves, checks, and level go away. But what of the 5 hit points? Do they come back immediately? How about the lost spell? Does the spell come back?

How about the negative level from holding an "aligned" sword (holy/unholy)? Do the hit points come back when you drop the weapon? Spells? Could someone kill themself by repeatedly picking up the sword (losing 5 hit points each time)?

Hit points should come back, since it is no damage (it's more like losing and regaining Con).

Spells... I recall having read, that they also come back, but I'm not sure about that.

I would rule that the spell and HP return as they normally would if lost. So the lost spell would become an open slot and would need to be prepared again, and the HP would need to be healed.

"Although this negative level never results in actual level loss, it remains as long as the item is in hand and cannot be overcome..."

I'd rule that everything returns as per restoration described above. So, yes, someone COULD kill themselves by 5s and/or wipe out all of their prepared spells if they really wanted to.

The lost spell becomes available again as soon as the negative level is removed, providing the caster would be capable of using it at that time.

It doesn't say about HP, though.

Yes you get the 5 HP back, because it's not damage, it's a penalty. When you remove the condition the penalty goes away.

Thanks for clarifying, that seems the best answer. :heh:
