Can I do it?

Lets say I'm a LG Paladin and have a +4 Lawful Holy Shocking Sword and then forsake my ways and become a Black Gaurd, can I remove the Holy part from my sword? Or would I have to buy (or find) another sword?

(Ok, so the story is just an example)

It's probably easiest to get or make a whole new sword.

However...good question. I'd kind of like to know myself. That's the thing with magical weapons...there's no set way for getting rid of parts of them you don't like. If you take a class and later regret it, you can just spectre those classes away, but you're stuck with those enhancement bonuses as written.

Best I could guess is maybe pay half the price of the original enhancement bonus to get it off, and then have it re-enchanted for full or possibly higher cost. Note that that's a house rule pulled out of thin air, and open to comment/construction/random insult.

So, for example, your +9 sword up there is normally 162k. Wiping out the holy would move it down to +7, or 98k...so half the difference would be 32k. Then, put another 64k into it to add Unholy back on later. So, that's 96k to make the sword more palatable...or almost as much as a whole new +7 sword. Best to get a new one made, in that case.

New sword.

According to the core rules, you can only add abilities to items. Now, it seems to be a pretty common house rule to allow "upgrades" like changing Shocking to Shocking Burst or something. But that's the DM's call.

Otherwise, it'd be free to swap abilities around. I want to turn my +5 sword into a +1 Keen Shocking Burst Sure-Striking sword; since the cost is the same, it'd take no time and cost nothing... not balanced.

Hmm, now that I think about it, you might be able to convince the DM to let you use a Wish or Miracle or something to do it. I mean, by the time you have a +9-cost weapon you've probably got some demigod you can ask for a favor, right? Having him swap from Holy to Unholy might be a reasonable request.

Especially if you "fell" as a result of some evil god's actions. He'd probably be more than happy to "corrupt" your old sword for you.

I'd allow it, I suppose. You'd need to pay the usual cost for the new ability, and get no refund, though. (the holy would just go away). Though a dark gods blessing corrupting your old sword as well is such a cool option if it's available I don't think I'd pass it up.
