Replacing the Astral plane with Spelljammer

In my next campaign, the Astral Plane will instead be... Spelljammer.

So we will have:
Githyanki space pirates
Illithids
Asteroid fortresses
Neogi slave traders
Dead gods in the void

Anyone have suggestions on what will / won't work?

How do spells that traditionally operate with the Astral function? Just as normal? If so, are the cords of Astral Projection a regular shipping obstacle? :-)

Instead of curtains/portals/whatever, will there be some version of the glass spheres that binds the planes together or do you not want so literal a Spelljammer transplant?

If travelling by Spelljammer is the only way to cross most planar distances, will that affect the portrayal of Gods in some cultures? Will boat imagery, for example, crop up more, since that's the way many will cross the cosmos?
 


Magic only goes to 6th level, so no Astral Projection, no goofy cords.

No crystal spheres, but the stars of any system always align in a spherical shape. The phlogiston is hardly visible between systems; only a slight multicolored mist at the very edge of a spelljamming vessell between the spheres.

Boat imagery = good idea.

Oh, and there are Black Aboleths in the Spelljammer space.
 

The Ethereal is the gateway to other planes, sort of like Beyond Countless Doorways or the Ptolus cosmology (outer and inner planes are now broken into demiplanes).
 


Besides Astral projection? ninth level spells do not feature regularly in many campaigns.

I took out the astral and etheral and use
Shadowplane and dreamlands for transitive planes
it works fine, PCs have used the shadowplane to reach the plane of earth and the dreamlands to reach a boundary with the plane of law and border of the far realm.
