Representing flying on the battle mat?

Normally, if one of the PCs or bad guys is flying, I use those clear plastic dice containers to represent a flying miniature. I have a few of them, but often not enough. Plus, since they are all the same size, you cannot easily represent a bad guy at 40' in the air and the good guy at 20' in the air without doubling up on the containers... which will then leave me one less container for the flyers. And, if I run out, it will sometimes lead to confusion at the table because I have a good sized group and an NPC or two, and often multiple bad guys, so it could be a long time between rounds for each PC in combat.

I suppose I could go out and buy 20 sets of dice to get 20 more containers, but that's not in my budget at this time.

Does anybody else use something that is cheap & easy (and relatively stable) to represent flying miniatures?

I use the same thing. When I have two creatures at different altitudes, I just write the altitude on the side of the clear cube with the same markers I use on the battlemat.

Instead of buying a bunch of dice to get the box you could just buy the box by itself.

We use the little plastic pizza triangles that you often get with take-out pizza that help prevent the pizza box lid from coming in contact with the pizza crust. You can build stacks of them to represent different height levels, taping or gluing them together for better stability.

Heh heh. that's going to be one hell of a lot of flying monsters you're ready for!

I can run that Wizard of Oz flying monkey scenario now... or, have dozens of bat swarms if the party visits Castle Dracula. ;=)

D'Karr great idea, but a $150 minimum order would lead my wife to kill me instantly - and then get really angry.

I use two things:

1 - Those little plastic tripods that come in larger pizza to hold up the lid.

2 - The altitude counters included in Fiery Dragon's 4e BattleBox, shaded in three tones of blue with a notation for height in squares and feet (1, 5 and 10 squares).

I have seen these used to pretty good effect.

We usually use a small(3/8" or 10mm) die for altitude, and when you're above someone, we use the clear dice boxes or pizza box supports.
