requiring players to buy books

Mongoose recently made my life a bit easier in that regard, the Pocket guides that they have been releasing seems to be enough for the players to use, and they don't complain about having to spend $30 - $40 on them. I intend to pick up the B5 Pocket guide for myself, leaving the hardbound copy at home.

Even if I had the chutzpah to try to require other people in my group to buy anything, I wouldn't.

I've never been in a group in which there haven't been enough books, dice, pencils, & paper to share.

Agreed. The minute I have a required text, it's a class, not a game. ;)

Also we have two married couples in our current gaming group. Not going to make them buy a copy of anything, even PHB, for each person.

Members of our group can afford to own a copy of the PHB. When we played Star Wars each person got a copy of that rulebook. Otherwise, buying other books is up to each person and not really encouraged, since the DM wants to keep control of campaign information and we don't use a lot of options from class books.
