My vtt game (5e) uses uses initiative rerolled each round. It’s very streamlined because Fantasy Grounds does the reroll without need for human intervention. It’s interesting and keeps you on your toes because you can’t necessarily rely on characters acting in a known order. You don’t know if your opponent will act twice back to back in two different rounds before you can (or if you will be able to do the same). You don’t know whether your ‘until the end of your next turn’ abilities will peter out almost instantly or last nearly two full rounds. It’s swingier, and makes forward planning harder, both of which probably favour monsters over PCs.
My in-person game uses cyclical initiative simply because re-rolling initiative every round takes too long in person. And that works fine too, although one related issue I’ve noticed is that people play very differently in a vtt when the initiative order is right in front of their faces, than they do on tabletop when it’s only listed behind my gm screen.
We don’t use weapon speed. 5e, y’know…
