Rescue at Rivenroar

Doesnt answer the sloppiness of not labeling teh map.

So the excuse now for a linear dungeon crawl instead of an actual AP is.....wait till chapter two? So the excuse for a bad adventure is....Paizo is selling a setting

The proble with a setting less setting is there is nothing there. No hook no life. Look at Shackled city, for example. Built from a single city, there are hooks to other places on the map, but its not really not for a setting.

*shrug* Wotc hasnt had much good track records writing adventures. They've had some gems, like RHoD. But the bar is set pretty high, so lets see if they can deliver. So far? Not even close.

I'm counting on them to correct the label-less map issue when they do the compiled version later this month, just as they edited some of the articles for last month. It'll be a shame if the map is still missing the label when it gets republished.

Yeh, not impressed with the clumsy missing bits. Did they get anyone to proof read this?

Please WotC - put a map key in, then put a bunch of fluff for Brindol in Dragon magazine to reflect the time that has past for RHoD. I prefer 100 years myself - That will allow me to have statues to the players last characters, but most people don't remember who they are.

However, as someone else has said - the bar fight and the Ogre and Cart are good bits. I'm gonna loot them and throw away the rest for now.

One thing that does worry me though. It's big, which is good. But I'm paying for the printing, which is bad.

I think when I print future adventures - I'll leave out the fluff which I will have already read and only print out the essential crunch

The "bar fight" and the "ogre bombardier" look like very good encounters.
Yes, but there are annoying blanks in the descriptions.

The Goblin Blackblades have a ranged attack without any actual range. The Tactics say that the second blackblade will use it against a target 12 squares away, so I guess it's at least Range 12. That's not bad for a thrown weapon.

The casks thrown by the Ogre are a bit confusing. "Ranged 20; –1 vs. Reflex; 2d6 fire damage, then the pitch cask explodes as described in Pitch Cask section." Then the next page gives a scatter rule "to see where the pitch cask actually lands. This becomes the origin square for a burst 1 attack."

The stat box for the Pitch Cask gives us "Standard Action; Area burst 1 within 10 squares; Attack: Dexterity vs. Reflex; Hit: 3d6 fire damage."

So what are the mechanics for the ogre throwing casks? Range 20, -1 vs. Reflex, 2d6 fire damage? Or Range 10, scatter, +4 vs Reflex, 3d6 fire damage? Or some combination?

You're getting it straight from the horses mouth since I was the cartographer for both Brindol maps.
1. City Gates
2. The Stone Wyvern (Tavern)
3. Axenhaft Security (Guard Service)
4. Shank's Shivs (Weapon Shop)
5. Brindol Market
6. Thirsty Zombie (Tavern)
7. Red Magic and Sundries (Magic Shop)
8. Shrine of Yondalla
9. The Craven Raven (Tavern)
10. Velorian's Playhouse
11. Brindol Academy
12. The Laughing Manticore (Tavern)
13. Kaal Manor (Noble Estate)
14. Teskerwill Manor (Noble Estate)
16. The Hall of Great Valor *
17. Cathedral of Pelor
18. Brindol Keep
19. Haskin Mansion (Noble Estate)
20. Brindol Cemetery
21. Temple of Wee Jas
* Note that tag #16 has changed from "Cathedral Square" in RHoD to "The Hall of Great Valor" in RaR.

However, sloppiness once again rears its head, notice the errors?

8. Shrine of Yondalla
21. Temple of Wee Jas

I hope they fix those two before they update the pdf. Since Yonalla and Wee Jas are no longer deities in the POL setting.

My take: the ogre tries to hit a PC with the cask (Range 10, -1 vs. Reflex, 2d6 damage on a succesful hit). If the cask lands on a target, it explodes (+4 vs Reflex, 3d6 fire damage, burst 1), otherwise I'll roll to determine where it actually landed (as explained in the adventure). Then, it explodes (see above).

The reason that I quoted your post wasn't to prove you wrong. Itis just that the example you have chosen to demonstrate your point wasn't valid since it is not an equal measurement.

For the record I had DMed SCAP and played in both STAP and AOW. My experience with SCAP was that there were endless dungeons over there too (remember Ebon Triad?).

In addition, I would like to point to you that the adventures at Paizo take you from lvl 1 till lvl 3 and they go up to the 20th level. Page count 52.

On the other hand this adventure puts you just before 3rd level. Page count 42.

Conclusion: For just one level adventure seems that there is a lot of content.

Paizo's website was very friendly place

All I will say about that is this, if you are a happy go-lucky Paizo person the forums are great. If you post anything even questioning some logic or constructive criticism it is not so friendly... but then it is the intertoobs. Not that the WoTC site is any better… hehe.

And I am totally burned out on ALL APs so I won’t be running this one but it will be nice to plunder if no one else in my group runs it.
