I am not actually sure if it does help that much. I just saw a grappler build guide recommend that if you rolled your scores really well that a grappling wizard might look into taking Con and Dex with Resilient if their DMs allowed it to be taken twice. Con for concentration for certain spell combos and Dex to avoid area affects since they are low HP and are going to be in the middle of battle rather than to the sides.
I never have seen a Grappling wizard in action myself. I would probably opt to multiclass into Wizard if I were going to build one myself if anything just for the starting proficiencies.
Although, I am not sure that I would ever really want to play a character like that, although it might be tempting if I rolled all 18s or something ridiculous like that. Then again, you could probably make all kinds of fringe concepts work with that which might even be more oddball and fun.
I just read a different guide trying to find the source. It wasn't the one that I was looking for, but they seem to think that Wizards are one of the better choices (blue, but not sky blue in their metric) for grapplers. See that wouldn't even occur to me as a player.... which is probably why I end up as DM. Still, it is an interesting guide anyway.
