Rest in Peace, Scotty

Two things:

1. That wasn't him. It was Shatner.
2. This is a bit more nitpicky, but they've never mentioned a first name for Uhura. Not like Sulu.

1. I stand corrected. I remember a scene with Shatner kissing Nichols but, for some reason, I thought Doohan had beaten him to it. There was definitely some suggestion of romantic interest between the two in one episode. I guess I got confused.

2. I know. I came across that first name in some fan fiction.

When I first saw Star Trek as a kid (which wasn't all that long ago) I always liked Scotty. Maybe it was the accent or the fact he was Scottish. But, now I see things defferently. I guess the idea of Scotty being the man behind it all. Sure, Kirk commanded the ship, but who made the ship work? Scotty. I like those kind of people.

I'm sure heaven's warp drives and reactor cores need fixing.

Another Sci-Fi star dead. That´s bad...
*melodramatic* Will all our dreams die? I mean, it´s not just that actors die - we aren´t on Mars yet, there is still no world-wide peace (in fact, it seemed we made a few steps back), no existing commercial fusion reactors, hell, even the Space Shuttle seems to fail...

Well actually for the first time in a number of years there really is some hope for Space exploration. There have been the first baby steps towards actual comercial space flight with Burt Rutan's success with the X-Prize earlier this year. Already several hundred people have signed up to pay the $100,000/seat for a trip on the successor craft that should be flying in the next year or two. Given the willingness of some people to pay $20-40 mil for a longer trip, I don't see any problems with filling seats on it. Lots of people in just the US can afford to pay that kind of money. There are also at least a half-dozen to a dozen different projects with similar goals including one run by John Carmack of Doom/ID Fame and Jeff Bezos the founder of Amazon.com. Paul Allen Microsoft's co-founder is one of the backers of Burt Rutan's space flight attempts as well. So there are some deep pocket people behind this.

For the first time since the Columbia disaster, I really feel like there is hope for space exploration.
