The issue we have is that the rules are silent regarding hit points and level loss. Not only that but the FAQ and official advise also seem quiet.
Losing and gaining average can still work fine with the change in hit dice. What is average depends on the method of rolling - assuming it is actually rolled. You'd need to work out the average according to the hit point rolling method, subtract this ammount and apply the new ammount.
If otoh you have a player that really enjoys the random thrill, I'd point out they've already had it. If we can remember what the original roll was, we can convert that to a % and apply it to the new die. If we couldn't remember I think we'd have to use an average method.
Basically it's a mess, so choose your poison.
