It is somewhat odd that in a game like 4e, where you can retrain feats, skills, powers...even multiclass choices there is no way to retrain ability scores. This is especially strange considering how important ability scores are to feat prereqs and the like.
However, while 4e is definitely geared more towards gamists than simulationists, I can understand people have a hard time swallowing a character suddenly losing int or cha, etc.
So here's a way that works mechanically and has none of those flavor issues
Retraining Stats
At 11th and 21st level, a character has the option of changing one of the stat bumps he applied previously to a different stat. You can only change 1 stat bump at each of these levels.
This works because all stats get +1 to that level, so your not actually "losing" anything, your just gaining more somewhere else. A fighter who decides to move one of his previous wisdom bumps to con isn't getting any dumber. His +1 to all stats at 11th ensures his wisdom remains the same. He's just getting that much tougher.
