Retro Space Opera Campaign Help

Another good idea is to think less. Seriously. In those old school campy shows, no one cared HOW something worked as long as it did. Make up any crazy reason why your FTL engine works, add lots of technical-sounding words, and off you go. Watch old school Star Trek, or any Star Trek for that matter - that's what THEY did to describe any kind of pseudo-scientific anything.
Additionally, a space opera standy is when the Hyper-DeAtomizer DOESN'T work... See the Millenium Falcon's hyperdrive, the raygun in Sky Captain, etc. That's when the fun really starts.

Thanks for the great input. I will be on the look out for Spaceship Zero. Looks like I can mine alot of good ideas from it. I will post my ideas and such on here for everyones enjoyment and critique.

P.S. I need a name for the good guys in my game. You know the military/law enforcement/spy organization that fights evil aliens bent on galactic conquest, raiding space pirates, and the like. Cannot use Space Rangers (buzz lightyear has that one taken), The Galactic Patrol has been used. Star Marshal? Any idea's guys.

Heres an acronym I've used in other campaigns...with different words, of course.

Agents of S.T.A.R.: Solar-system Tactical Armed Response

Solar Patrol

Agents of E.C.L.I.P.S.E.: Exploration Commerce Law Industry Patrol Science Espionage. Badge could be 8-pointed star with black circular center with badge number in middle, data chip behind it.

Oh, I really like that! Kinda reminds me of the old U.F.O. televison series.

There was an Iron Lords of Jupiter d20 mini game in Polyhedron too. That might be an idea if you want to do d20.

Giving them the intro is great and exactly what I was talking about! You could also give them some history, written the same way and maybe even introduce their family into that. Story form grandad about his time on Xendon VII and how he was able to reapair the pulse generator on his old Dyna-Tech III jump drive before those new models came out.

Just a thought!

And how about the Star Patrol. Kind of a mix of the Solar patrol and agents of Star idea. I did like the ECLIPSE thing too, though.

Star Rangers is a possibility thought to, to many saturdays with my kids watching power rangers. :)

I found these on a TOM CORBETT, SPACE CADET fan sight. Some nice space slang.

Space happy - Slap happy

Rocket liners, space freighters, jet scouts, spacers -- Types of space ships

Stand to! -- Attention! (an order)
Rocket-ranger -- Space cowboy
You've been drinking jet juice -- You're off the beam
Speak of Saturn -- Speak of the devil
He's as unstable as a heavy isotope -- He's "teched" in the head
Blow up some meteor dust -- Paint the town red; "meteor dust" is also a handy expression for "hot air" or "baloney"
Space hobo -- An unidentified meteor
Get those firecrackers popping! -- Get those jet engines working!
Spaceslug, spacecrawler, neptunian gnat -- (as in "You worm, you!")
By the moons of Jupiter!
By the rings of Saturn!
By the clouds of Venus!
By the craters of Luna!, etc. -- These expressions indicate surprise ("Well, for Heaven's sake!"), anger ("Darn it!"), or amazement ("Gee whiz!")
Space station -- Rocket ship airport
Blast off! -- Scram!
Spaceman's luck! -- Good luck, Luck o'the Irish!
The Big Empty -- Outer space
Ground pounder -- Planet-bound person
Spacer -- A person who makes his living working on spaceships
Railing - Sailing through space, This refers to the use of a linear proton accelerator (a railgun) to propel a ship through interplanetary space
