Hmmm. I've always thought the fighter was good enough. (I sort of wondered about the barbarian when 3e came out, for that matter.)

Forgot about that. That was one of the weirder mechanics created.

As for the fighter being good enough, we'll see. In general, as far as base classes go, I'm for flavor, flavor, flavor, and if they come up with a distinct, well-designed class I'll consider including it in campains.

Of course, the book will not only introduce a base class. It'll have lots of other stuff as well.

It's hard to be too overpowering when you have an unwavering attack plan.

"I charge!"

"What do you charge?

"Is there another cavalier?" "No."

"Another noble?" "No"

"A dragon?" "Yes, well, there is the illusion of a noble dragon cavalier, but it's obvious...."

"No, nope, that's what I'll charge, 'Unhand that star of India you cartoonish villain!'"

"The static image in no way responds to your attacks."

"'Aha, a tough one I see, you've improved since last we met.'"

Cavaliers

Hey folks,

"Hmmm. I've always thought the fighter was good enough. (I sort of wondered about the barbarian when 3e came out, for that matter.)"

That's always a big concern when you present a new base class, to see if you could create the same class using the standard array of classes to reproduce the effects. Let say for the record, the cavalier is a distinct class. Trust me.

"but will it let you play Lvl -1 or -2 characters."
Maybe... ;)

"and if they come up with a distinct, well-designed class I'll consider including it in campaigns."
I think you'll be happy.

"Of course, the book will not only introduce a base class. It'll have lots of other stuff as well."
Lots and lots of stuff!

And, he's balanced, and does not have any weird order of opponent rules to follow.

Of course, I'm being cryptic b/c the manuscript just went into editing/development and there may be some changes. In all, I'm really excited about this one. It was a nice departure from evil ;)

Best,

Robert J Schwalb

Yeah, I remember the cavalier. Classic.
He gave us such golden bits of wisdom as...

DM: However…through defeat, you shall find victory.
Diana: What’s that supposed to mean?
Eric: It means the warranty has run out on Dungeonmaster’s brain!

DM: The only cure is the foot of the yellow dragon.
Eric: What are we supposed to do, just waltz up to a yellow dragon and ask to borrow its foot?!
