Return to the Desert of Desolation

Psion

Adventurer
Hey all,

I was considering making the Desert of Desolation a stop for my players in the River of Worlds games.

This question comes in two parts:
1) I have only run Lost Tomb of Martek, not the two adventures leading up to it. What are your thoughts on I3 and I4?
2) Are there any resources or ideas you would use when updating the adventure to 3e? Like, say, using the desert races from Unearthed Arcana, etc.?

I3 and I4 are both superior to I5 in my opinion. I3 Pharoah is more or less a straight dungeon crawl in a pyramid, but a very good one at that. Lots of memorable scenes. I4 Oasis of the White Palm has a lot more roleplay as the characters interact with the various factions at the oasis, plus there are a few small dungeons. Both modules have excellent atmosphere, and are a little less bizarre than Lost Tomb of Martek.

I would love to run this whole trilogy myself, but haven't. I've only had a chance to run Pharoah and that was many, many years ago in my earliest days of D&D. Though I've reread the whole trilogy several times since, most recently about 3-4 years ago.

I'm pretty sure that someone has done a 3e conversion of these modules in the conversion library here...

...just checked and they were done in the old conversion library and probably weren't "wotc-safe". I have a pdf copy of the conversion done by Mark Stout which I can email to you if you wish - it is 207k.

Cheers

I3 is really cool. I am less crazy about 4 and 5. But five gets really good reviews.

I was just thinking about a demiplane of pyramids. It would be a world composed of Desert of Desolation, Necropolis, and Midnights terror.

Or perhaps the "Demiplane of Desolation" is the better name.

It is either that or put all the pyramids in Anarouch. I am still debating this. I would have to make Netheril more Egyptian in culture... wonder what the implications of that would be with Mulhorand... eh, its more mysterious if you dont explain things. I will just portal my people to Raurin...

Still trying to figure out how the DoD series relams adaptation justifies an egyptian pyramid in an area that was Imaskari dominated. Might have to seriously retcon the realms history there... Or perhaps that Mulan style was all the rage for the 4000 years after the Mulan Gods arrived...

I would love a copy of this, if you're willing to email it to me.
