Returning to painting [new stuff up!]

Latest work

These are the three that I've been working on lately. I finally got to the point where I was happy with what I had and could not easily make them better. So, here ya all are, three Heroquest Red-skin goblins.
As you can see, I decided to NOT use metallic pait for the weapons and belt buckles. I's not really NMM (my blending is not that good yet) but I tried to think on where light would hit and reflect and paint accordingly. For a first attempt, I think it turned out decent. However I am not really happy with the sword and scimitar hilts. But I am not sure at this point what to do different... Also I tried a different technique on the reddish skin tones that I think worked pretty well. All in all, I'm fairly happy with these three.

So I just started work on my next mini and I thought I would try an ink wash to get the dark colors into the cracks and crevices (realizing I would have to re-paint the mid-tones) but, instead, the wash stayed on the heights and didn't flow into the depths. I thinned the ink around 4-1 with water and used around a 0 or 1 brush to get decent coverage... Any ideas what went wrong?

What color ink and what color paint? If the ink is too dark in relation to the paint it will cover the paint as well. Also is the ink mix 4 parts in 1 part water, or the other way around? I'm guessing the first of the two, which is probobly still a little thick. Normally I mix them 2 parts ink and 1 part water, or 3 parts ink and 1 part water depending on the colors of ink and paint I'm covering. Hope I've helped.

Thanks for the reply! Ink was black, paint it was going over was my equivalent to Bleached Bone.

Approximately 4 parts water to 1 part ink.

I am wondering if I need to thin the ink more or if I need something to break up the surface tension of the ink so it will flow better...

If your going black in over a white paint you'll deffinatley have to do some cover up afterwards. I would for sure water it down to a 50-50 mix for that. But the ink will still leave a bit of a "film" over the paint. Ive used severley watered down inks before to give something really light colored a darker ink (1 part ink 5 parts water). which works if youre looking to make something look "dirty" but you would still need a bit of touch up on the main paint color.

Right. I know that after the ink wash I would need to re-lighten the parts that the ink film darkened, I have no problem with that. I guess I was just expecting it to get into the tight places better than it did.

I've been working on this one for a bit. I tried painting the flesh 2 or 3 times and I'm still not REALLY happy with it but, I'm tired of this mini and want to move on, so I am calling him DONE.
Happy things:
I like how the bandages turned out. A much different look than the first one but still lots of color.
I like the bloodpool at his feet. This was a total acident. After priming, I washed him with dark tan to get a good brown base and this was the run-off. I was originally going to clean it off. Now I'm glad I didn't. Just nasty.
Not-so-happy things:
The eyes. I can't paint what I cant really see. This was the best I could get. Would have liked to give them a nice, red pupil...
The flesh. While better than the first mini, still not really what I wanted... Grrrr.

Oh well, on to the next one, eh?
