One thing about the planescape thing...

One reviewer on Amazon blasted it because the worlds in BCD were "worlds" not "(outer) planes" -- he felt that the book was more spelljammer than planescape.

I don't know how fair that is (since I dislike spelljammer but love PS and BCD myself), but I think it is fair to say that BCD targets something slightly different than Planescape.

Hmmmm. I haven't seen this book, but from the description, it did sound somewhat Moorcockian. At least the planar trading stuff. For highly magical/technological societies, planar travel was just as common (if not more so) than any other sort of travel.

IIRC, in it's heyday, Melnibone had roads that if walked upon, would take you to other planes.
