Review of Map Folio I

Just out of curiousity, I'm not familiar with the map-a-week thing, but AFAIK the maps are all taken from previous modules. Is that the case with those in the Map Folio, and which modules are the maps from?

I don't think that they were all taken from modules, but some of the early ones appeared in the 2e Dungeon Builders Guide.

Question: How big are these maps? Are they notebook sized and allow the DM to just march off on a battlemap or are they the size of the map that came in the back of the DMG?

If they're notebook sized, then this product is useless.

They're 8x11, and I agree, they're useless.

No, the maps are not all taken from previous modules. In fact, most of the maps in the map-a-week feature are new.

A quick estimation on my part is that 70% of the maps are new and 30% are re-used.

Some re-used ones come from Return to the Tomb of Horrors, Axe of the Dwarvish Lords, Dungeon Builder's Guide, Spellbound (FR), and Hellgate Keep (FR).

Utterly. Most of them don't even photocopy well, and it's irksome that that doesn't seem to be a design issue with a lot of the folks designing dungeons today. People are trying to get too caught up with fancy isometric high-color-depth maps. Plain 2D black-and-white line art is the only way to go.

Just a reminder to people: This is Map Folio I, not Battlegrid Folio I.

Traditionally in D&D, maps have been dungeon and wilderness maps.

These mapsa are intended as an aid to adventure design. I don't know yet how useful they'll be. It will vary from person to person.

From what I've heard, some of the maps seem poor choices to include, but we'll see.

Cheers!

I was just wondering if you mean that they don't colour photocopy well, or just in the case B&W photocopying?

I think part of the attraction of this product was meant to be that they were in colour - you didn't need to print them out in colour yourself. Obviously it didn't work too well in your case. :)

Cheers!

And not Battlemap Folio either, right? The confusion--and the resulting letdown--is understandable. I hear my fellow gamers refer to a tile or a megamat as a "map" all the time. It's not like there's an official lexicon for them to go by. I've paid a lot of attention to this product, and the promotional info I read didn't clear things up on providing any hard data on the size or scale of the maps.

On the whole, it's just disappointing as heck that WotC, with their resources and talent, don't market more useful gaming aids. I mean, they're marketing a bag of dice now.

Black-and-white, which I imagine is the type of copying most folks do routinely.

Points taken, Felon.

Yes, I'd love to see some battlemaps from wizards in addition to the normal maps.

The dice are... odd. :)

Cheers!

They are freaking $10 bucks! That's a pretty nice price for high quality, color maps. I could see them as being useful, but just not to me...

The January "Overland Map" ones are slightly-modified versions of the campaign maps in the Birthright boxed set for the Vos region.
