Sounds very promising - this is my favorite (sub-)genre, and it certainly needs some more strong entries for those home-viewing swashbuckler-fests. :)

Thanks Krug for posting the review. I'm with Hand of Evil on this as well. I think the movie from what I've seen and heard should be a blast.

I saw Mr. Depp on Inside the Actor's Studio last night. I still can't believe Hanson from 21 Jump Street is 40 years old now. :p

I saw the preview for this movie when I went to see T3 (or was it Battle Royale 2? I saw them both on the same day), and I immediately marked it down as a must-see. The effects alone (I love skeletal undead!) sold me right off the bat.

On the one hand, the effects seems really well-made.

On the other hand, the heroes and villains aren't called Guybrush Threepwood, Elaine Marley and LeChuck -- and that's an unforgivable oversight when dealing with zombie pirates.

I saw the film last week and it was much better than I expected it to be. I admit to really having loved the ride as a kid and having a nostalgic love for it as an adult, and so was really thrilled that the writers managed to come up with a plot that incorporates all of the major parts of the ride.

It's also fun to watch and see how many different scenes (really more like shots) are recreations of stuff from the ride -- watch for them because there are many (over a dozen for sure).

All of the actors were good, the story was surprisingly good, and imo there was only one real plot hole and it doesn't appear until very late in the film, and is forgiveable.

Definitely a fun fantasy pirate movie. Good stuff.

(Oh, and Disney had the highest security I've ever seen at a screening: bag searches and metal detectors, along with a half-dozen guys walking up and down the aisles looking for videocameras. Amazing, and somewhat humiliating. Grrr.)

What was the plot hole? add spoiler lines if needed.

My family loved the movie and we've never been on the ride. I'd like to know what the scenes are that correspond to the ride.

My wife was thinking of doing a pirate character in an online game and this certainly gave her plenty of ideas.

Saw it last night. OK, time to break out the Seafarer's Handbook and maybe pick up Swashbuckling Adventures :) A couple years ago, a friend of mine did a campaign set in a group of islands; I started work on something similar --
