[Review] Rêve the Dream Ouroboros (Long)

I will. It sounds very cool, so if I can swing it, I will get it. I will be needing it for some....ah...reference material....for a project I am working on. ;)

Wold that be a project that we've been waiting for for a while, something involving 3E in the title ?

I sure hope so ;)

EDIT: Question - do the books only come in PDF?? :(

May be if the pdf sell enough they will print them ? The artwork is really great, and the cover and Screnn by Florence Magnin are nice too.

It is my favored game, although some of my player don't like it, alas. I pretty much agree with Samael review. I must add that starting an adventure with this game is so easy : "you awake together [no need of a long introduction to gather the party] in a strange place [another dream rift, very usefull for the gamemaster].

Unless you want to dig up a French version, I'm afraid so.

I talked with François Levy, the guy who translated the game and launched Malcontent Games to commercialise it. It's obvious he's not making a penny out of it so far, but I doubt he'll ever have the financial backing to publish a paper version.

Maybe he's reading us ? If he is, he can comment !

Yes, I'm lurking.

You're right about my not making a penny, and frankly, that's never been my intent. This all started as a fan's effort and the desire to get a copy of the rules into my monolingual players' hands, and one thing led to another. Eventually I had a substantial translation on my hands and it seemed a shame not to introduce it to the English-speaking gaming world at large.

I currently have a license from Multisim (the game's French publisher and international copyright holder) to sell Rêve in English for a while--but not indefinitely. When that license expires I'll re-evaluate where we are (as I am sure will Multisim).

Yes, it would be great to publish a print version. I'd love to see English-speaking players get their hands on all of Rolland's artwork (not just most of it) and Florence Magnin's wonderful cover/box art (I like the boxed version better than the bound one but I imagine it was horribly expensive to produce). And I won't go into the pros and cons of PDFs here.

But I will say that right now it's either a PDF version or no version. Maybe if the electronic version can establish a sufficient "installed base" then one could justify traditional publishing, but right now it's too early to tell--after all, we've only been selling this for a couple of months, and word is only now starting to get out. Time will tell.

And I hope that time will tell nice things and in a year or two a hardbound English version of Rêve de Dragon will have its place in my shelver next to the French version!
