Eosin the Red

First Post
I have seen several comments on reviews lately. I did a few recently for Hero Games but thought that I would put this out for those of you in dire straits :)

Cross-Posted from my Website [www.mabinogin.com]. I will also post my reviews on my website in addition to ENworld.

I am no scholar but I do have opinions and from time to time I like to let the world know what I think. This is a collection of my reviews of RPG material.

I do take requests to review as time permits but before you ask the following needs to be said up front so that there are no miscommunications.

1. I like fluff not rules, a book of prestige classes is unlikely to impress me much and unless the flavor text is outstanding the overall score is likely to be reflect my dislike of crunch. Some examples to illustrate - Geanavue, Magical Mideval Society: Western Europe, The Book of the Righteous, & The Witches Handbook would rank very high with me. On the other side, the Book of Vile Darkness & The Complete Anything would likely not interst me much.

2. I play d20 and Hero System games and that is what I will primarily review - if you have questions feel free to ask and I will get back with you.

3. It is pretty darn hard to earn a perfect score from me but equally hard for me to butcher a product. I can usually find something redeeming even in what I consider lousy products and I can also find ways that things could have been done better.

4. Ask before me before committing me to a review. Sometimes I am engaged in making a living, occasionally I am not interested in a product or a line, and finally it is not uncommon for me to find myself with too much RPG on my plate.

5. PDFs longer than a 100 pages wear out my eyes or my printer.

6. My reviews are unedited, much like my posts. This means there will be occasional typos and whacky sentence structure.

Other than that I think I am free game.

I hope you have better luck than I did. I posted something similar on RPG.net a while ago when I ran out of stuff to review (and couldn't buy anything new in the near future due to vet's bills). Since I had written something like 80 reviews there (and 130 here), I thought I would get some response. Nope!

Still, I've not sure just how much value reviews have. RPG.net recently installed hit counters for their reviews, and I was underwhelmed. I was expecting 1000s of hits. But instead, my least read review (for Bastion's Into the Blue) got only 900 hits, and my best, OGL Horror, has 2100. I think the top review at RPG.net is for Eberron, with something like 8000 hits, but other than that, everything gets from 1000-2300. Which is better than most other sites (and presumably on par with here), but surprisingly little.

I think I am more of a sporadic reviewer than someone interested in jammin out dozens of reviews. If no one responds that is ok with me, but I hear a bunch of moaning from publishers and happened to have some free time where I can read but not write. I also like to do a review each month for my own website so this is just a notice to those folks who feel that they cannot get their product reviewed. I already set my own internal limit at 2-3 reviews per month and generally in the areas that I would already be reading.

Thanks for the comments though. That is one heck of a lot of reviews.

Crothian,

I am tanked up for the time being with 4 reviews for the next month or so (I don't want to over commit.). When I get those hammered out I will shoot you a line.

Jraynack,
Got the email and looking forward to it!
