I think you and @Parmandur are arguing a bit too much on numbers when you seem to have different ideas for what "experienced" means. I think it is safe to say based on those charts that at least 40% of the player-base is 25 or younger, or Gen Z. 5th edition was released in 2014, so these players would be at oldest 19 when been playing 4th edition. Most would be younger, or much younger. Now, we all have our own "gaming bubbles," but I'm someone who is 25 (just within Gen Z), and I can say that out of everyone I've played with, only a couple have tried a different D&D edition. More are experienced with 5th edition (it's been out for 6 years) but that's not really the same thing. I think it is safe to say with 5E's explosive growth over the past few years, most current players have not played an edition earlier than 5. Combination of factors for that I think, including Critical Role, Dimension 20, NADDPOD, mainstreaming of Marvel and fantasy generally, nostalgia for pre-2000s material, etc. An additional thing; your not likely to meet many "inexperienced players" online. They are by nature inexperienced, so are starting their first couple of games. Why would they be joining online forums for TTRPGs when picking up a hobby so recently?
