Rhaavin/Seafaring Campaign - Adventures Of The S.S. Fortuna

Room is open! Server IP address is ip68-2-244-122.ph.ph.cox.net:6774

EDIT: Session concluded.
The Fortuna set out from Rhaavin, sailing into a rough storm. She took on water for several hours, but finally, the crew managed to bail the water and keep the ship afloat. However, as the storm began to subside, lightning grazed the port side of Fortuna's hull, also igniting one edge of the main sail! The party, and other crewmen, worked furiously to extinguish the flames, eventually saving the vessel.

The Fortuna's two prominent magi, Mage Master Orvidan, a middle-aged human man, and Mistress Esmere, a young and beautiful half-elven lass, came on-deck and magically repaired the worst damage, then introduced themselves to the party. Most of the party, as with much of the other crew on-deck, were dazzled by Esmere's beauty and friendly attitude. After repairs were concluded, Orvidan returned to his room belowdecks, while Esmere took up a perch in the crow's nest.

Life onboard the Fortuna returned to normal, and the crew busied themselves during the long journey south, seeking rumored treasure on the small islands off Kinrisar's western coasts......

OOC Note: We play again on Wednesday, at 4 pm EST. Over the next few days, I will add the session logs, deckplans, and such to either my own website, or the T13K homepage. Also, on these forums, I'll open a thread under Game News And Views, for OOC conversations, notes, server opening notices (as this thread is likely to be locked at some point) and so on regarding the campaign. Likewise, sometime soon I'll open a Tavern thread for the Fortuna's galley and cabin, for In-Character conversations and roleplaying during the Fortuna's travels. Note that EXP bonuses will be given for Tavern roleplaying!

EDIT: Session finished. The Fortuna arrived at a small island chain west of Kinrisar, where an old pirate-wizard supposedly retired over a hundred years ago to live out the rest of his days. Now, the Fortuna's crew is scouring the islands for the late wizard's treasure trove, the fruits of his long pirating career.

The party, consisting of Armon Winsyl, Fleown, Smoke, Alaron Thorn, and Goir, was sent to one of the larger isalnds to explore and hopefully find the treasure cache, while one of the ship's marines, the half-orc Torak, was sent to watch over and guard them. After several hours of exploring the edges of the island and part of the interior, the party took up some high ground on a hill to survey the area. However, they found themselves surrounded by sneaky feline predators, a pack of wily and frightening krenshar.

The party tried to ward off the krenshar with bowshots, but failed to harm any of the creatures until the pack struck. A long battle ensued, with Fleown and Torak fighting from the ground as Armon, Goir, Smoke, and Alaron sniped and supported from atop the hill. Smoke and Fleown tried to use some spells against the cats, and managed to quickly render one krenshar asleep through their magic, but were otherwise ineffective. Armon and Alaron managed to slay two krenshar with bowshots, aided slightly by Goir and a lucky dagger toss by Smoke.

However, one of the krenshar sent Fleown, Torak, and Alaron fleeing in terror after unleashing the supernaturally terrifying shriek its kind are famous for. The others struggled on until their companions overcame the terror and returned, but by that time, Goir and Smoke were seriously injured and barely standing. Alaron quickly began attacking one krenshar, trading blows until he was nearly unconscious, at which point Fleown returned and saved him with healing magic. Armon, forced to battle one of the krenshar in melee now, wielded Alaron's sword, left behind earlier, and managed to eventually decapitate the krenshar! With the help of Fleown, Alaron, and Torak, the last of the beasts was defeated, though Fleown and Torak were the only party members still in decent shape. Fleown spent the last of his magic healing a few of Alaron's and Smoke's wounds, then the party took a break to rest and recover from the difficult battle.

The party discovered that a small cave on the side of the hill contained a half dozen krenshar kittens, which Alaron noted could potentially be sold to trainers for good coin. Also, a little bit of scattered treasure was also found in the cave, left behind by previous adventurers that had fallen victim to the krenshar.

EDIT: Session over. The party slept in the krenshar's cave, finding 55 gold pieces and four gemstones. Armon, Goir, Alaron, Fleown, and Smoke each took 5 gold, while Goir is carrying the gemstones currently for the group until they can be appraised and sold. He estimated the hematite to be worth about 8 gold and the lapis lazuli worth about 10 gold, but was uncertain about the worth of the carnelian or jasper. In the morning, Fleown healed the wounds of Goir and Smoke, but had to expend all his healing spells for the day, receiving little help from Eraekoth, obviously displeased with the group somehow.

The party had found half a dozen krenshar kittens inside the cave, and left them in there with the exit covered, leaving some food and water behind. The party left in the morning, traveling west across the island for an hour or two, finding a small stone building amidst the jungle. There, they fought a zombified bear and two tiny bug-creatures, stirges, which attacked Alaron and Goir. Goir lost some blood to the little beast that attacked him, but eventually shot it down after it flew away with a full belly of his blood. Alaron slew the other before it could do much harm, while Torak and Fleown destroyed the zombie bear with a little effort but no injury to themselves. However, beforehand, Fleown tried twice to turn the zombie with the power of Eraekoth, but was unsuccessful, his deity showing disfavor towards the party that day.

The September 17th Wednesday session is finished. The party inspected the small stone building, outside which they had fought the zombear, and saw that it was a single large block of stone, shaped by magic seemingly. The roof was raised in the middle of the 15'x20'x7' building, and by climbing a tree, Goir found that the roof was open to the outside, but filled with cobwebs. The door on the building's west side was large and intimidating, made of wood but covered with a layer of leathery flesh from some unknown creature, painted blue to stand out amidst the jungle scenery, and covered in arcane sigils drawn in blood.

Cautiously, the party opened the door from a short distance, Goir putting his grappling hook around the large handle and pulling the heavy door open. Inside, the room was dark, with only dim light shining through the thick cobwebs. Smoke lit his bullseye lantern while Goir lighted up a small tree branch to serve as a torch. The party slowly entered the building, looking around the plain room, considering burning down the cobwebs. Armon noticed two shapes amidst the webs, and tried poking one with his longsword, but it leaped out of the way and attacked Alaron nearby. Over the next few moments, three more spiders skittered down and attacked the party, only causing a few minor wounds with their mandibles. Alaron was poisoned and felt a little weaker, but not too bad. The party destroyed the spiders and tore down the webs with swords and sticks. They began to search the webs and floor for any treasure, notes, journals, or other helpful items.....

EDIT: Session finished. The party ventured deeper into the small underground complex beneath the stone building. In a storage room, the party found some strange magical components and such, plus some potions, spell scrolls, island maps, and minor decorative art pieces. However, as the party filtered out of the room, Goir was attacked suddenly by an unseen creature on the ceiling!

The poor rogue was rapidly strangled to death, as Armon tried to slay the creature, but only succeeding after the creature dropped Goir's lifeless corpse and made a break for it. Fleown and Armon tried to apply first aid to the rogue, but it was too late. Then everyone debated returning to the ship with Goir's corpse to see about having him raised from the dead, but Torak, the half-orc marine accompanying the party, convinced them to instead finish looting the underground complex, to pay for Goir's raising and make it back to the ship with at least something to show for their efforts.

The party explored a little more of the place, finding a large room filled with desks and tables, covered in alchemical apparatti, tomes of magic and lore, and myriad other trinkets. However, in that room was also four small, skeletal wildcats, apparently animated to guard the room or something. The group dispatched these small nuisances quickly, though suffering from tremendous bad luck and expending much more effort than should have been necessary. The party then took a breather, and will soon finish their work down in the strange complex.

EDIT: Session finished. The party inspected the large room, finding various potions, scrolls, alchemical items, familiar-summoning components, strange tools, and alchemy lab devices. Smoke found a secret compartment in the underside of one desk, which contained a small book written in a strange language, as well as two complex magical scrolls, which he stored in his backpack for the time being. The party inspected the small eastern corridor, finding a locked iron door.

They searched for a hidden key or switch, and found an illusory wall, leading to a small bedroom, mostly used for storage though by the previous inhabitant. Smoke ransacked the room until he found an iron key in a secret compartment, and used the key to unlock the southern room. The south room was a small chamber, half the floor occupied by a glowing circle of arcane sigils, a powerful arcane diagram seemingly used for containing summoned creatures. Indeed, resting within the circle was a tiny humanoid creature, apparently bound by the arcane circle.

The creature was only tall enough to reach a human's knee, with mottled, scaly red-gray skin, a pair of curved yellowish horns on its head, and black, leathery bat-wings. Its eyes glowed a sickly green, while the faint scent of sulfur and brimstone emanated from it. Once the party entered the room, the winged critter took notice and flew up to hover a few feet of the ground, eye-level with the humans and elves. It gibbered for a few minutes, then Smoke tried addressing it in some of the older languages he knew. The imp-like creature responded, and the two conversed for several minutes in a strange, rasping, foul tongue suited to fiendish creatures. Smoke occasionally translated some of its words into Tradespeak for the rest of the party, who conversed about the nature of the strange creature, what to do with it, and whether to trust it.

Fleown was suspicious that it might be a type of fire elemental, due to its smell and strange appearance, while others suspected it of being a fiend. The group decided to inform the Fortuna's Mage Master Orvidan later, and leave such decisions up to him. Smoke locked the room behind him, and the party left to rest in the former krenshar lair. Armon and Alaron hunted briefly, but were only able to find food for themselves. The rest of the party ate some of the few remaining trail rations, then everyone slept in the krenshar cave, putting the krenshar kittens into a makeshift pen to keep them from gnawing on Goir's corpse during the night...

Server's open now, about half an hour late though because I took too long in the shower, and I'm operating on only 1 hour of sleep and about 10 hours of restlessness and boredom TRYING to sleep.

EDIT: Session over. Party returned to the S.S. Fortuna with some treasure for themselves and several chests full of stuff for the ship. Party identified three scrolls as Scrying, Nondetection, and Invisibility Sphere, all wizard scrolls at the minimum caster level for each spell. Amulet found previously was identified on the Fortuna as a Necklace of Adaptation, which was given to Fleown for the time being. Gems and precious stones were appraised for value, but not yet divvied up. Alaron, Armon, Fleown, and Smoke were each paid 50 gold pieces and given a Cure Light Wounds Potion (caster level 1) for the treasure they brought aboard. Goir was Reincarnated by the Fortuna's druid, in his original human form, no worse for wear, though with somewhat foggy memory. Goir inquired about and received a free set of thieves' tools, and will likely keep the most valuable of the precious stones for himself. Armon kept one of the krenshar kittens to raise as a potential pet, the rest will be sold at some port market. Torgar Hammerstriker, a dwarven fighter, joined the party after they rested and were given their next duty in the morning. The Fortuna's druid restored everyone's health to prepare them.

Server open for the Wednesday 10/1/03 game. NOTE: Starting next week, server opening notices, session recaps, and so on will be posted to the Fortuna campaign thread in Game News And Views.

EDIT: Session finished. The party went ashore another small island, only about two miles in diameter. Armon lagged behind, and may join the group later. The dwarf, Torgar, talked a lot and got into a little friendly bickering with the others. The party found a small stream and followed it inland, and along the way fought off a wild boar. They found a small freshwater pond with a natural spring, and investigated a nearby hill, wasting a few more hours with banter. Then the party traveled north and found only some small clearings, a little marsh, and some other small hillocks. Alaron walked around the entire coast and found nothing of interest, then returned to where the party had left the boar carcass up in a tree. By the time he got there, night had fallen and the others were already there, starting to cook the beast for dinner. The party has wasted one day and has another three before the Fortuna will return. NOTE: Remember, next week and afterward the server notices and session recaps and so on will be posted in Game News And Views.
