I'm not sure if I could have thought of worse tactics. :( Sorry, Land Outcast.

Darkness gives the half-fiend behir a miss chance, which she doesn't need.

Casting Unholy Blight takes a Standard Action, which would be far better spent closing and biting for the Improved Grab. Same for the Breath: Don't bother. The thought here is that you want to use what you are best at...and that's the Bite/Imp. Grab/Constrict/Rake/Rake/Rake/Rake/Rake/Rake. Throw in a held charge of the Poison (Sp) if you really like the idea of preparing before the PCs enter.

Round 2, you swallow whole, then use the cleave feat to bite another PC, and do the whole thing all over again. Be sure to attack with your claws first, then bite, so you get all of your attacks in.

Breathe? Please. Don't be insulting. ;)

attributes that make the Behir a CR 8 are underplayed:

40 ft speed - The cave is 15ft by 25ft

Climb 15ft - The ceiling is 15 feet tall

Breath weapon - at CR 8 it might be useful, but at CR 10 is lame

Attack Bonus - Can't dump more than 5 into Power Attack if it wants to have a chance to hit (considering the PCs have the choice of who to send in first, and will probably send the AC 25 cleric and/or fighter)

I was thinking of Deeper Darkness
Nail nailed it, Darkness will only hinder the behir.

That's the way to go. But nothing stops you from throwing a Breath Weapon down the stairs as soon as you hear someone approaching...
 

Is this half-fiend behir the guardian of a dragon's lair? I'm curious, given earlier comments.

When my players got there, they called out for the Ghostlord (weren't expecting him to have company) and thus alerted the behir. That got them into combat outside the cave, where the behir could use her speed - she chewed on the dwarven fighter, taking -20 on the grapple check, then ran back into her cave to swallow him. By the time the rest of the party followed her, he was lunch.

Yep. My party put out a flag and tried to attract attention from a long ways off (after they'd seen the Behir but didn't know what it was). Nearly killed one (and really should have, I screwed some things up).

heh... excellent!

Did they have his phylactery... and were just going to hand it over?

Believe me: messing up a complicated monster in combat is No Big Deal(tm).
