Ride'm Halfling

Grundle

First Post
In our upcoming campaign I'm playing a geriatric halfling ROG/CLR ex-wrestler (think Burgeous Meredith in Rocky) named Pops. Well Pops has a STR of 4, but his sidekick Sumoe helps compensate for that.

Sumoe is Pops latest wrestler-in-training. He is a half-orc FTR/MNK whom the DM has allowed to change size categories (via a home-grown feat) from medium to large (more for weight reasons than height, if you know what I mean. ;) )

I'd like Pops to spend a lot of time riding on Sumoe's shoulder's, especially in combat situations. I remember reading a thread about this sort of thing before on these boards. Does anyone have a link to that thread? Also, I'd like to hear from anybody who's actually tried (or seen this tried) in a game before.

I know it's crazy, but it sounds like a barrel full of laughs!

My opinion?

The halfling would spend most of his time keeping his balance and the large half-orc would be hindered because of the halfling.

Of course, it's your game and its all about having fun.

Happy gaming!

A recent Dragon magazine had a gnomish contraption just for such a purpose, IIRC. I don't know which issue, unfortunately...

Reasonable. I was thinking the halfling would be subject to the standard mounted combat rules (ie ride checks). I hadn't considered things from the otherside though. Perhaps a something like an armor check penalty, or a dex penalty would simulate fighting with a halfling on your shoulders.

Thoughts?

Cool! I've got the recent Dragon issue on gnomes. Maybe that's the one! I'll check tonight. Thanks.

This sounds similar to the situation of the Master Blaster character from Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome. I'd say watch the movie to see what that pair were capable of, but I'd also say watch the movie because it's just darn cool.

Otherwise, consider the half-orc a mount, and let all the ride skills and feats apply.

Nothing like a harness or saddle to ride a humanoid in the Gnomish Invention article in the recent Dragon 3E Gnome issue. Closest thing was a magical saddle for riding foxes.

:Grundle wigs out:
Whaaa!!! I want a rules for a humanoid-saddle/papoose/baby-carrier!

Ok, I'm better now. Guess I'll just make something up and try to float it to the DM.

:p
