Riding an invisible mount

Last session my player's riding dog was turned invisible, so when he's being carried by the dog the PC turns invisible. He got off the dog, turned visible, and bribed some gnolls. Then he got back on the dog and is invisible again.

Is all that by the rules?

Now what happens if he starts fighting while mounted. Is he still invisible after shooting some arrows or closing and engaging in mounted melee attacks?

Invisibility only works on carried GEAR, not on carried creatures. This is not by the rules.

Well, there is always the shared spells thing that wizards and their familiars get. He casts inviso on himself, and decides to share it with his familiar. That's one way around that conundrum. Now, if the PC were the riding dog's familiar....

Even if he were the dogs familiar and the dog was the one casting invisibility, once his invisibility was broken, remounting the dog wouldn't reapply it to him.

But yeah, getting on an invisible mount doesn't turn you invisible. Just like holding hands with your invisible friend doesn't turn you invisible, either.

OK. I ran it your guys way last night, and all of my players are pretty upset.

They think that invisibility isn't much good if the head lice, tape worms, dust mites, and bacteria inhabiting their body remain visible, letting enemies pinpoint their location. But hey, I told them, "those things aren't 'gear' and you still get the 50% miss chance."

The PC is a Paladin and this is his special mount. So don't shared spells apply for that, same as wizard and familiar?

Only if he casts the invisibility himself. And if they ever get more than 5 feet apart, the mount loses its invis.. and if the PC loses his invis, he doesn't regain it by mounting the mount.

Ok, I think you're starting to get a bit silly now ;p
