Riding feats question

Here's an odd one for you rules buffs.
Say I have a PC Centaur fighter. I have mounted combat as a feat. Would this mean I could use a ride check as my AC?

Also could I take advantage of ride by attack and spirited charge?

By the letter of the rules, obviously not. Unless your centaur was mounted on something, i.e. riding another creature, of course. I would consider house-ruling some custom feats that would provide the equivalent of the Ride-by Attack and Spirited Charge feats, probably as part of the Dodge-Mobility feat chain.

Excellent idea. I'd probably make a feat that was the equivalent of ride-by attack, only for non-mounted characters, and call it, oh, I don't know, spring attack or something. ;)

I believe there was an issue of Dragon Mag that covered this. IIRC, both the mount (the centaur) and it's rider (whomever you have riding you) need the same Ride-based feats to pull this off. So the centaur could Spirited Charge / Ride-By Attack, but only if (a) he had the feats and (b) was mounted with someone who also had the feats. And I think only the rider could improve your AC for Mounted Combat.

That was my first thought--but ride-by attack lets you charge while attacking during the charge. Your movement for the round has to be in a straight line, but you can take a double move and still use the feat, whereas spring attack limits you to your regular move.

(Centaur monk, anyone? :D )
