What do you think about this? If I have a ring of counterspells set to counter hold person, would it counter hold monster or mass hold person? What if my ring was set to hold monster? Would it stop hold person?

By the RAW, I would have to say it doesn't work.
Unfortunately, this gives the Ring of Counterspells the same problem as Counterspelling in general; each new book published makes it less useful.
I think what I'd do instead is create a ring of Improved Counterspelling which could counter spells of the same school as per Improved Counterspell.
