Ring of Sustenance and Growing Up

Since it's not like the infant is going to be eating tacos, anyway, I think we're actually talking about much the same thing. But, if the body learns to develop homeostasis without eating *anything*, by the time you start introducing food, the body will reject it because many foods contain things that are both harmful and helpful. If it can get by without, why bother?

Once again, this is an analysis directly counter to all current thinking on how children develop. The body is able to process food because of genetic encoding in our DNA. It isn't something that must be "learned".

What, Nature vs. Nurture has been resolved to be 100% Nature? How come i didn't get the memo? :\

I'm curious what happens with people's digestive system when end up on I.V. drip for extremely extended periods. I do know that a drastic change in diet makeup (such as carb:protien:fat ratio) takes the body some time to adjust to. Likewise longterm strict vegetarians have an extremely tough time digesting animal products. So while it might not be a permanent retardation of digestive functions, it'll be rough for a while.

For the personal touch, probably a good idea to hand feed the Baby at least occasionally. No Milk? Summon a Celestial Cow...
I know the thread has "moved on", but: awesome idea!

Leave the child with a trusted ally and hide it in secrecy.
Here's the problem with the "Leave it with someone" solution:

Scrying and Divination by the Bad Guys(tm).

Sure, you could drop off the baby. And the Evil Guys could swing by and pick him up. Custody switch!

Storm Raven just disagrees with me on principle. I think he hunts me down on threads just to be contrary. ;)

You're analysis is how I understand it to work.

Beware of Elven social workers....

Wow this kid is dead. It probably has 1 hp 1 AOE and *poof* Shield other isnt going to tip the balance. The merciful thing is to kill the child (if the world is so harsh as to make leaving childrearing in the hands of an NPC is dangerous). You folks are going on about the lack of communication with the child as being debilitating imagine the kid being fireballed or stabbed (but cured from the brink of death) repeatedly..... really slay the child now and spare it from a brief life of misery and pain.... Hopefully dad is suffering an alignment crises for wilfully bringing about the torture of an infant.

Personally I think the ring of sustenance for a growing baby is a brilliant idea. Especially if there isn't a mother or wetnurse around to feed it.

As for potential problems, I believe that all could easily be avoided with some minor vigilance.

Digestive atrophy can be avoided by simply supplying the baby with lukewarm water. for the first few months a baby is on liquids only anyways so the lack of solid foods is negligible. Supplying the water ensures the swallowing reflex is never lost thus ensuring a future of actually eating.

Once the baby reaches an age that it can eat solid foods, introduce them to the baby. I think the major problem that needs to be overcome is the lack of a milk source until solid food can be given.

As for the other sociolagical problems, just because the kid doesn't need to eat doesn't mean you won't play with him/her or talk or sing or anything else. That is just ghoulish...

Errr? Tell that to our (now former) diaper service.

Rugrat 3.0 is about 2 1/2 months old. Bottomless pit for breast milk, started at 20 oz./day and is well above that now. The first two weeks while purging out the jaundice he crapped twice/day, but after that maybe a week or so between BMs. Sure from time to time there can be a slight yellow racing stripe residue from farts, but that's it. Lots of urine though.

Rugrat 1.0 was a formula baby from pretty much the start (Mom had nursing issues). That was a MUCH different result.

This is a truely weird thread! I love it

My only additional thought on this thread is that if that baby ever grows up he should have the personality of a typical cliched D&D adventurer (aka Paranoid Sociopath) Mondo Stats and every munchkin thing you can up with --

I figure the kid will be probably be Epic Level by the time he is 15 and will have enough spare magic stuff to blow up a small planet -- No JR you can't have the Vile blade -- take the Exalted one instead

Socially he/she will not have a clue how real people act either having spent all of his life at war and in the company of the looniest people in creation -- aka Adventurers

In short it sounds like a blast to play
