I think Murrdox pretty much nailed the rule about materializing relative to speed.
For every 5' thickness of wall (or whatever), you have to check for materialization, whether you're full out running or taking your time. Seems a bit odd, but that's not the first aspect of the spell that does so.
Running obviously lets you get through the wall faster (at 3/4 of the run speed) if you manage to make all those materialization checks successfully, though.
