Rise of the Runelords Char question

Hi

Its my turn to DM and as such I'll be running Runelords in 5e, I've done a bit of research on the 'net and have found lots of conversion rules, so I'm good for that (however any tips you may have greatly received!)

The problem I'm having is with one of my players character builds. He's playing a Barbarian who was raised in the wilds and as such he hates cities and mistrust civilization in general. I'm running a prelude to get to the group together which isn't so much of a problem as its set outside of the city (The players have been approached to help get herbs for Ethram Valdemar), however I'm struggling with how to fit his character in during the Swallowtail festival and events that follow, any suggestions how I can work his character in without having the player have to alter the character concept too much?

Cheers :)

I think that's up to the player to do if he wants to play in your game. You've clearly already put a lot of work into this; it's reasonable to expect some effort from the players too. That's the social contract of roleplaying.

Did you give the players some sort of overview of Runelords before char gen? If you have/had done that then a steer on the flavour of the campaign sh/w/ould help characters be suitable for the story that you are all going to tell.

Finally, isn't being in a city for the character that hates cities and mistrusts civilisations, a roleplaying opportunity for the player. Refusing the enter the city is refusing to play your game.

Although most of the battle of the festival happens in town, the attackers start outside of town. It would be easy enough for the character to become involved long before anyone else in the group. He could be forced to seek shelter and help within the town just to survive.

Sandpoint is not a city - but it might seem one to one who hates cities. But there should be no difficulty with the character as is, unless he refuses to go into the thing he hates. Then the player, not the character, is simply being unreasonable. The dislike of the city sets up antagonism and role-playing opportunities. It should not create detriments to actual play, unless chosen to.

Is it possible you are worrying too much though? Do you have a reason to think he won't go into the community? I mean, I dislike cities myself, and am a country boy at heart, but I still go into them. Because sometimes thats where things are that you want to be a part of. Just assume the character wants to be a part of the festival, even if it is in a city, and then put him there to start the game.
